Discovering genetic substructures in the Dutch population

We at Omnigen specialize in DNA research and analytics. We are most proud of our personalized DNA analysis and with that said we continue to further our research and knowledge base. Currently, we have one of our employees conducting research to discover genetic substructures within the Dutch population. A genetic substructure can be explained as a pattern which is common to multiple individuals from the same location. Using these genetic substructures we are going to be able to find out where someone comes from within the Netherlands. For instance, let’s say you currently live in the Dutch province Limburg, but your DNA has more similarities towards the Frisian genetic substructure. This means that your ancestry indicates that your ancestors are from Friesland or maybe your parents are both Frisian and moved to Limburg. This is why we are doing this research because we all want to know where we originate from and where our roots lie.

We are currently conducting this research now until the 1st of June 2019

We have been sending our customers who want to participate in and receive information about this research an email inviting them to fill out a simple survey. Everyone who wants to join that has a DNA report from us can simply fill out a survey asking for their email address which is linked to their account in our database or their DNA report barcode. We also ask about the person's place of birth so that we can correctly correlate their DNA report to their ancestry, otherwise, we cannot discover genetic substructures associated within the provinces of the Netherlands. We also ask about the places of birth of the participant's parents, which are optional but add the most value to our research.

How do we handle privacy?
For this research we don’t have to look into detail at your DNA, we look at it on an overall level. We only look at the differences and similarities between the genetic profiles of participants from the different provinces. Therefore, it is not necessary for us to keep your name in the dataset we are researching. Before we even process the data, we anonymize the data by replacing the barcodes with a random string of characters. Due to this, we won’t be able to give participants individual results but we will share a summary of the results on this blog in the near future.

More data for us to research means that we get better results, which will make our ancestry predictions more accurate. Even, when you know your ancestry is not associated with the Netherlands, we can always use your data to validate our results.
