Do you get enough sleep?


Research has shown that your genes affect your sleep patterns. There are six genes which together exert this influence. In the study of Coriell Personalized Medicine Collaborative (CPMC), these genes were compared with environmental factors. This enables the researchers to demonstrate that the genes indeed have an influence on sleep behavior, but that environmental factors such as smoking, also have an impact on the duration of sleep.

Effects of too little sleep

It is often said that it is important that you get enough sleep. The biological purpose of sleep is not yet known, but it is well known that inadequate sleep results in health problems. That means you have more risk of obesity and diabetes, but also more risk of a weakened immune system and psychological problems such as depression.

Recently more research has been done on the genetic influences on sleep. The focus is on sleep duration, which is also linked to a number of demographic factors.

By gaining more knowledge about sleep duration in combination with environmental factors and genetic risks, medical treatments can be specifically tailored to the individual. Besides treatments, preventive measures for certain risks arising from too little sleep can be taken.


What is enough sleep?

Earlier research has shown that, in general, a person requires a minimum of six hours of sleep, but that it is better to sleep for eight hours a night. When you sleep for less than six hours, the risks of various health problems are many times higher. It depends on the person, how many hours of sleep is needed. Some only need six hours, but others need at least nine hours of sleep.
